Nolan Ryan pitched the sixth no-hitter of his career tonight, extending his major league record as the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics, 5-0.
Ryan, who is 43 years old and was making only his second start after returning from the disabled list with lower back pain, became the first man to pitch no-hitters for three different teams and is now the oldest to throw one. Cy Young threw a no-hitter in 1908 at age 41.
''It comes so late in my career that it makes it extra special,'' said Ryan.
His fifth no-hitter, which broke the record he shared with Sandy Koufax, was for the Houston Astros against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981.
The right-hander also pitched four no-hitters for the California Angels. Ryan, the only pitcher to surpass 5,000 strikeouts, struck out 14 tonight, extending his major league record of 10 or more in a game to 201. He walked two in his 59th shutout.
